What is a Podiatrist?

There is a whole field dedicated to the health of your feet—podiatry. Skilled healthcare professionals, podiatrists diagnose, treat and assist in the prevention of foot, ankle and lower limb conditions. On any day, they’ll see a diverse mix of patients with a range of musculoskeletal, circulatory and neurological disorders affecting the feet.

Why should I see a Podiatrist?

Bearing a significant amount of the body’s weight, your feet are much like the foundations of a building. If they are structurally sound, they shouldn’t cause any problems. But if they’re not in good shape, the whole thing will come crashing down. In the body, this means other structures will overcompensate for any lower limb dysfunction, leading to biomechanical imbalances, referred pain and possibly even headaches.

When should I see one?

If you are experiencing pain or have any of the following conditions, book an appointment.

• Toe, foot or ankle pain
• Heel pain (or plantar fasciitis)
• Over-pronation (flat feet)
• Back Pain
• Diabetes and circulatory conditions
• Arthritis
• Skin problems
• Nail conditions
• Gait abnormalities
• Balance problems

Why it is important to check your Clinicians Qualifications

Why should I check?

It is very important to know whether the person who is treating you holds the correct qualifications thereby ensuring they have undergone the full professional medical training required to perform the procedure/procedures they are offering.

Why is the HCPC important?

As an independent statutory regulator HCPC role is to protect the public. They do this by setting standards for professional skills, training and conduct and keeping an ongoing Register of professionals who meet these standards.

How to check your Clinician is qualified.

Your Clinician should be able to provide their HCPC number on request, however you can check this yourself by visiting the HCPC website and entering the surname of the practitioner and their profession.
